History/Overview
The E-tron Sportback is a new addition to the Audi range for 2020. It’s a sportier-looking version of the E-tron crossover whose lower roofline is aimed at drivers who acknowledge the SUV’s dominance in today’s marketplace but want a vehicle that looks more like a car.
Available Trims
Audi offers the E-tron Sportback in Progressiv and Technik trims that will be familiar to existing Audi owners, along with a special Edition One package. All share an electric drivetrain that powers all four wheels with 355 hp and 414 lb-ft of torque, though 490 lb-ft is available for short bursts of acceleration in what Audi calls “boost mode.”
Standard Features
Progressiv trim standard exterior features include 20-inch wheels and tires, aluminum-look roof rails, self-leveling HD matrix LED headlights with LED daytime running lights, LED taillights, auto-dimming/power-folding/heated side mirrors and headlight washers.
Progressiv trim’s cabin is fitted with stainless steel door sills, heated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, cargo cover, four-zone climate control with cabin pre-conditioning, an integrated garage door remote, leather upholstery, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, driver’s seat memory, power steering column adjustments, passive keyless entry, and a hands-free power tailgate.
The infotainment system comes with satellite radio, a smartphone interface, front and rear USB ports, navigation, and HD radio.
The E-tron Sportback’s list of standard safety features comprises blind spot monitoring with lane keep assist, city-speed forward collision detection with automatic braking, automatic high beams, tire pressure monitoring, and front and rear parking sensors.
Technik trim adds 360-degree camera views, an advanced parking aid, wet-arm wipers, ventilated front seats, front-passenger power lumbar, heated rear seats, a leather-trimmed dashboard, power door closers, puddle lights, rear side sun shades, upgraded interior lighting, wireless smartphone charging, a full digital gauge cluster, a Bang & Olufsen sound system and a head-up display.
Finally, the Edition One package gets Audi’s driver assistance package as standard, along with 21-inch wheels, plasma blue paint, exterior aluminum trim, orange brake calipers, a second battery charging port, and an interior leather package.
Key Options
A driver assistance package adds adaptive cruise control, navigation with intersection assist, pre-sense 360, traffic sign recognition, and active lane assist with emergency assist.
E-tron’s luxury package brings Valcona leather, dash panel with contrast stitching, leather door arm rests and knee pads, and upgraded front seats with massage function.
There’s also a black appearance package of black grille and window surrounds and roof rails.
Fuel Economy
As of this writing, Audi has not published fuel consumption estimates for the 2020 E-tron Sportback. The 2019 model’s figures should carry over, at 3.2 Le/100 km (city and highway), along with a 95 kWh battery that promises 329 km of driving range. In Europe, Audi offers a larger battery pack that is expected to come to Canada too.
Competition
The E-tron Sportback’s main competitors are the Tesla Model X and the Jaguar I-Pace.
